# Compatibility

> BeamDisk's requirements and what it's tested with: Macs with Apple Silicon on macOS 27 or later, TrueNAS targets on SSD and hard-drive pools, Linux LIO targets, CHAP, file systems, Time Machine, and what isn't in version 1.

## Requirements

| | |
|---|---|
| **Mac** | Apple Silicon (M1 or later) |
| **macOS** | macOS 27 or later |
| **Network** | Wired Ethernet recommended. Tested on 10 GbE, at MTU 1500 and 9000. |
| **Storage** | An iSCSI target: see [What a target needs](https://beamdisk.app/docs/targets/requirements/) |

## Targets

| Target | Status |
|---|---|
| TrueNAS | Tested: SSD pools and hard-drive pools (RAIDZ1); 512-byte extents (recommended) and 4 KiB; with and without CHAP, one-way and mutual; MTU 1500 and 9000. [Setup guide](https://beamdisk.app/docs/targets/truenas/) |
| Linux LIO / targetcli | Tested: Debian 13; persistent reservations, including ones kept across a target restart; MTU 9000. The benchmarks ran on it. |
| Others | Not tested yet. BeamDisk uses standard iSCSI; [tell us](https://beamdisk.app/docs/troubleshooting/get-help/) how yours does |

## Features

| | |
|---|---|
| **Discovery** | SendTargets, by the server's address |
| **Authentication** | None, CHAP, mutual CHAP (MD5) |
| **Integrity** | CRC32C header and data digests (optional) |
| **Exclusive access** | SCSI persistent reservations (SPC-3) |
| **Outages** | Writes held for 15 to 300 seconds (60 by default), with automatic reconnects |
| **File systems** | APFS and Mac OS Extended (Journaled): read and write. exFAT, FAT and NTFS: read-only. [Details](https://beamdisk.app/docs/disks/file-systems/) |
| **Free space** | Given back to thin-provisioned targets (SCSI UNMAP), on APFS disks |
| **Time Machine** | Supported, after a one-time profile. [Set it up](https://beamdisk.app/docs/time-machine/set-up/) |

## Not in version 1
